Matthew Honas, Composer

TCCC is thrilled to announce its first commission, ᛞᛁᚲᛏᛖᚱᛖᚾᛊ ᛗᛃᚢᛞ Dikterens Mjød for horn, viola, cello and narrator written by Matthew Honas!

In the composer's own words: «Because I grew up reading Norwegian myths and hearing Swedish Instruments, I decided that the program/story of the piece would be based on Norse mythology while the music would be inspired by the sounds, rhythmic, and harmonic structures of Swedish instruments and music. This way, the piece is inherently tied to both sides of my heritage and neither aspect can exist without the other.”

The idea of commissioning Dikterens Mjød emerged as a result of exploring the rich cultural heritage of Northern Minnesota where TCCC is currently based.

A native of Wichita, Kansas, Matthew Honas has been lauded for his emotional sensitivity, dramatic lyricism, and seamless integration of new techniques within traditional and innovative structures. Matthew creates original, thrilling works which challenge the performer while showcasing their virtuosity. Matthew was the winner of the 2020 Mullen Prize for Sacred Music and his music has been performed at the New York Flute Fair, the Madison Flute Festival, the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, the Moreau Center for the Arts, and the premiere concert for the opening of the Hamel Music Center.
